About Boulder Holistic Dentistry
Boulder Holistic Dentistry has practised in Boulder since 1983 and has been mercury-free and mercury-safe since it opened its doors. Restorations are placed in direct composite rather than amalgam, and metal is avoided wherever the clinical situation allows; the practice treats dental metals as a potential allergenic and oral-systemic burden rather than an inert default, noting that nickel tends to provoke overt reaction while titanium is associated with vaguer, more insidious complaints. Amalgam removal follows the SMART protocol: a dental dam, supplemental suction behind the dam, supplied oxygen for the patient, covered skin, constant rinsing under high-volume suction, and an activated-charcoal rinse beforehand.
Metal-free ceramic crowns are milled chairside by CAD/CAM in about two hours, so no temporary is required. Root canal treatment is staged over several visits, reading the canal system on cone-beam imaging and disinfecting with laser and ozone in place of bleach before a calcium-oxide root filler or a formaldehyde-free rubber-based sealer closes the tooth. Material biocompatibility can be screened by serum testing and chairside muscle testing first. All operative work is performed by the dentist.

Common Questions
How is mercury amalgam removed here, and why does the method matter?
Drilling an amalgam at high speed releases a plume of mercury vapour and particulate aerosol. The practice mitigates that with physical barriers: a dental dam so particles are not swallowed, extra suction behind the dam to evacuate vapour, an oxygen mask so the patient breathes clean air, skin covering, constant rinsing under high-volume suction, and an activated-charcoal rinse beforehand. Staff wear mercury-rated respirators. These are the measures the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology recommends.
Does the practice place metal in the mouth at all?
It works metal-free wherever that is possible. It has placed no mercury amalgam since 1983, using direct composite fillings instead, and its crowns are metal-free ceramic. The stated reason is that metals are more allergenic than they are usually credited with being: nickel can produce an overt reaction, while titanium is associated with vaguer presentations such as malaise.
How long does a ceramic crown take, and are veneers available?
Crowns are fabricated chairside with CAD/CAM, which produces a permanent metal-free ceramic crown in about two hours, so the appointment does not end in a temporary. For anterior and reconstructive work the practice also offers ceramic veneers, bonded veneers, full-mouth reconstruction, and custom-milled abutments for implant restoration.
What is ozone used for in treatment?
Oral infection is a mixed biofilm of bacteria, viruses, fungi and sometimes parasites, each ordinarily requiring a different drug. Oxygen/ozone therapy is used as a single agent intended to act on that mixed population while supporting the surrounding healthy tissue without toxic side effects.
Can material compatibility be tested before restorative work begins?
Yes. Three approaches are offered: serum compatibility dental testing, which screens blood serum for pre-existing antibodies to more than 140 metals and chemicals found in dental materials; chairside muscle testing; and samples the patient can test at home or with other healthcare providers.
